Hypnosis and its derivative, hypnotherapy, have been the focus of several misconceptions created by layman’s imagination. People either believe them to be falling in the domain of the occult, or don’t regard them to be genuine scientific endeavours. Even people who have observed hypnosis on others mostly refuse to believe in it. They argue that those who can be hypnotized are mentally not strong enough. But this again is a complete fallacy. That hypnosis is an alternate state of consciousness is another misconception that has been circulating for quite some time now. A hypnotized person is completely conscious of his surroundings. During the hypnotic state, the subject relaxes completely and is therefore able to focus fully on the suggestions provided by the practitioner.
Another misconception, which has been circulated by some scientists, claims that hypnosis can work on merely 5% of humans. It is commonly thought that hypnosis training or hypnotherapy cannot cause changes in appearance or in behavioural patterns of an individual. Hypnosis certainly cannot transform the body in abnormal ways. But by mentally conditioning an individual to give up addictive behaviour like eating too much and chain smoking, and by raising one’s inspiration levels, hypnosis can usher in important physical alterations in a person and pave the way for a healthier body.
Experiencing hypnotherapy is a fine way to lead a richer and fulfilling life, and thus one should not pay attention to the misconceptions, and go for hypnotic sittings with an open mind.
