Finding Commercial Printing

by Pat Sloan

A lot of people who are just beginning to move into the world of printing don’t have any idea that there is actually an immense difference between printing for normal everyday people and printing in the commercial industry. Usually they’ll simply walk down the street to the local copy center and have them take care of their jobs. But is that the best thing to do? No, because its best to leave the larger professional jobs to the professionals. Here’s why:

First of all, commercial printing usually takes a lot more creating of document templates and typesetting than any other type of print job. When you’re creating a flyer, brochure, catalog, or business cards, you need to have excellent results. These materials are selling your company. You don’t want the materials to damage your company by making it look incompetent or messy.

You need to keep in mind that some time in the future you’ll probably have a few tough deadlines. Even if you’ve got multiple weeks before the printing project is due, a situation may still arise before then when you need to make last-minute changes. Make sure that you seek out a company that will be able to deal with your last-minute changes, as well as rush orders.

Professional commercial printers will also use and even require better quality paper and ink than any other printers. Sure, any copy center could probably do a special order for any type of paper you request, but they wont have the high-quality inks that a commercial printer has. They also wont know the right distributors that will allow them to keep your costs down. Do yourself a favor and stick with a company that has experience and relationships with vendors.

A professional printing company will have much better customer service if they typically handle a lot more professional print jobs. Large professional printing companies realize that customer service is a large part of their job, and they should be willing to do anything to make you experience as easy as possible.

Finding a great commercial printing company is very different than looking for a company to make some copies of a flyer for your local garage sale. For professional jobs, you want a company that has a great deal of experience with your desired printing methods to create a quality, professional product, and that has relationships established with their vendors so that you get the best prices around on the quality materials you’re seeking.
