Browsing For A Wonderful Film? Check Out These Wonderful Film Evaluations
Each Hollywood producer has one ambition in mind when they make a film. They want to put out a movie that is a giant success that the public loves. A magnificent plot, some admirable actors along with a couple of special effects and there you have the formula for a huge box-office victory. Or do you? Sometimes a film will have all of the alleged required factors and it will still be unsuccessful at the box office. There are no surefire recipes to make a Hollywood blockbuster.
Lantana – Heartbreaking, adult story of relationships obstructed by monotony, routine, and absence of articulation. LaPaglia plays a cop, whose marriage has stagnated, leading him to have an affair. In the mean time, he investigates the disappearance of a lady whose own marriage is in danger. The film is beautifully nuanced at every turn. Cast includes Anthony LaLaglia, Geoffrey Hurry, Barbara Hershey, Kerry Armstrong, Rachael Blake, Vince Colosimo, Daniela Farinacci, and Peter Phelps. (121 minutes, 2001)
Scandalous – Featherbrained sham in regards to investigative Television journalist who runs afoul of a team of con artists as he tries to extricate himself from a homicide charge. Cast includes Robert Hays, John Giegud, Pamela Stephenson, and Jim Dale. (94 minutes,’84)
Sexy Beast – A retired British hoodlum, living the life in Spain, is visited by a fierce gangster who wants him to work one more heist. Trendy, aggressive, current day gangster’s film has admirable acting containing a special performance by Kingsley as the malevolent perpetrator. Cast includes Ray Winstune, Ben Kingsley, Ian McShane, Cavan Kendall, Julianne White, Alvaro Monje, and James Fox. (88 minutes, 2001)
The Last Time I Saw Archie – Webb’s lone try at comedy is less daft than some of his more solemn films; a shame, since William Bowers’ script-based on his own Army experiences had indisputable potential, and Mitchum pleasingly underplays as the con guy. By the way, the genuine Archie Chamber sued for invasion of privacy. Cast includes Robert Mitchum, Jack Webb, Martha Hyer, France Nuyen, Louis Nye, Richard Arlen, Don Tangles, Joe Flynn, and Robert Strauss. (98 minutes,’61)
Slaughter’s Big Ripoff – A assassin is still playing games with the Mob in this dull action film. McMahon gives more effort to his role as the mafia boss than it is worth. Cast includes Jim Brown, Ed McMahon, Brock Peters, Don Stroud, Gloria Hendry, Dick Anthony Williams, and Art Metrano. (93 minutes,’73)
