Bronchial Asthma Treatment: Ipratropium For Acute And New Asthma
Asthma is a chronic condition characterized by shortness of breath, wheezing, and coughing due to the narrowing of the bronchi. Asthma that has symptoms concerning the bronchi is commonly referred to as bronchial asthma. Bronchodilators are designed to help this narrowing of the bronchi in the event of an asthma attack. There are also bronchodilators made to prevent the narrowing of the bronchi.
Asthma usually develops in children and is sometimes outgrown when they reach a certain age. Continuous exposure to triggers when they are older risks the recurrence of asthma. Non-asthmatics may also develop asthma when left on similar toxic environments due to infection.
A non-asthmatic naturally does not carry inhalers with them. They dont really need it. But in the event of a mild or acute asthma attack, especially one that happens for the first time, they still need bronchodilators. Bronchodilators commonly come in the form of albuterol, or salbutamol. But another inhaled bronchodilator was designed to relieve acute or new asthma symptoms.
Ipratropium is a tea extract developed into a drug for treatment of chronic obstructive lung diseases. It is a anticholinergic and is pharmacological structure is similar to that of caffeine. Ipratropium is primarily a treatment drug for COPD. But it has been applied in asthma. It has been considered as a short-acting bronchodilator even though it takes about an hour for full effectiveness. Because of this, it is almost always combined with albuterol or salbutamol.
Anticholinergic drugs generally have side-effects like those experienced in recreational drug use. But as an inhalant, ipratropium does not display these side-effects. It is also not addictive ” probably because it lacks the euphoria factor. The advantage of of ipratropium is it does not affect the heart. Bronchodilators and epinephrine has cardiac side-effects ” a shortcoming that ipratropium makes up for. This makes it an ideal drug for those with, not only cardiac asthma, but new and acute asthma as well.
